His tip about running "make clean" on ~/Desktop is okay, assuming people actually use Desktop the way he does. Which I observe that many, possibly most, users don't. Apple says that "The desktop is where you do most of your work", but I see a lot of desktops with no files whatsoever.

You can also hide all the desktop icons with a defaults setting:

    defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop false
