Actually, we've never NOT been Europeans, and we've never NOT been in Europe. Europe's just a continent (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe).

However, we did recently leave the European Union. (See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Union.) Completely different thing, but very commonly confused.
