I disagree: for many of these topics, hackernews is, to me, a source of more level headed discussion and an opportunity to see both sides in a reasonable way. Yes, the quality does go down a lot, but it's still better than in the other sites I read.


Unfortunately this dynamic is unstable: the more it happens, the less it can continue. It's only because these threads are fairly rare that it works at all—if it does work at all. Having just had to post https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40418629 and https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40418627 in a thread from 2 weeks ago, I'm not so sure.
