This is back before it was discovered to be an immune deficiency.

Being a little picky, GRID (Gay Related Immune Deficiency) was certainly thought to be an immune deficiency.

But they didn't know it was acquired, or that it was a virus, or that it wasn't just gay related, or anything else much.
