You're splitting hairs here, common usage of "texting" includes sending pictures, video, and audio.

He's not splitting hairs, he's probably just from 'somewhere else'. Here where I live (NL) texting someone means SMS, 'apping' someone is used for whatsapp and MMS is used for the rest.
